DULUTH - Duluth is prepared to tackle any ice rescues that this icy winter brings.
The U.S. Coast Guard, Duluth Fire Department, St. Louis County Rescue Squad, and Duluth Police Department performed ice rescue training Thursday afternoon.
They used an ice rescue boat, ice anchors, and a rescue board to save five planned victims in Lake Superior.
FOX 21's Morgan Kolkmeyer fell through the ice, and was one of the survivors for the drill.
It typically takes the U.S. Coast Guard anywhere from six to 10 minutes to get proper clothing and equipment on, plus the travel time to the scene.
They train regularly for numerous situations, including consious and non-responsive victims.
It is important to always carry a sharp object, such as ice picks or even screw drivers, to help pull yourself out of the water, and to remain calm and keep your head above water.
