Where's All The Snow Go?

DULUTH- MnDOT has about 15 different snow storage sites where they can dump all the snow they remove from the highways and put it on MnDOT property.

They tend to dump it at the closest location to wherever they're removing it, but there are environmental concerns to consider, according to officials.

The closest dump site in Duluth is under the "Can of Worms" exit, but with it being so close to the lake, they try to use that one as a last resort.

Once the season's over, they don't melt the snow piles, they just wait for them to melt themselves.

Jeff Hall with MnDOT told FOX 21, "Boy, if it gets frozen in when you get these great big banks like we have here, we've had snow here as late as May and into the early parts of June up in Duluth because it gets packed and frozen in so hard."

MnDOT says the melting and compaction helps provide extra space at the dump sites.

So, if we continue to have above average snowfall totals, there will still be plenty of storage.
