St. Scholastica Hosts Speakers Against Polymet Mine
By:
DULUTH- Experts weighed in tonight on the risks of going forward with the new poly met mine project.
They say they want to help inform the public so they can better take place in the commenting period.
Advocacy director for Water Legacy, Paula Maccabbe said, "but the big investor in this mine is a foreign corporation called GlenCorp Extrada. And they've already had contracts so that the copper, would go from Polymet to GlenCorp, for at least the first eight years, to China. So Minnesota gets all the risks and all the profits go to a foreign company and the copper goes to China."
Executive director for Honor the Earth Winona LaDuke said, "the reality is that the combined fossil fuel impact of those mines and those pipelines, is immense. It's going to mean tankers on the great lakes, full of a lot more and a lot more pollution in our region."
The public commenting period will end March 13th. And people can submit comments by mail and email.
