DULUTH - Cardboard boxes came to life as Northwood Children's Services held their 2nd Annual Art Sled Rally.
"We finally got the last piece on and now it looks amazing," said sled racer Libby.
"We raced them down the hill trying to avoid the trees, but our goal was to hit the trees," said sled racer Edgar.
"Mother nature cooperated and gave us a 10 degree day," said Northwood Marketing Director Kathleen Wolleat.
The Art Sled Rally is part of their recreational program.
Kids and staff get together, plan and set goals and get the reward of racing down the hill.
"It was really, really fun," said Edgar.
Team "Fighter 1" built their sled in a week and won Best in Show.
"We were there most of the day. Just working on the idea, sketching plenty of things," Edgar said.
They dedicated the "aircraft" to some important people.
"We are trying to commemorate the 148 fighters," said Edgar, "They serve us so ought a give something back to them."
Families from the community joined in on the fun making this year's rally even bigger than last.
All the proceeds from the day go to Northwood Children's Services.
"We had more sleds from the community which was fantastic," said Wolleat.
"We should get more people involved in this. Make it a big, big event," said Edgar.
"We just hope it gets bigger and bigger and people come out and enjoy some wintertime fun," said Wolleat.
Everyone rememered just what sledding down a hill is all about.
"We have an exceptional recreational program besides this and just to see the kids get excited and planning for it, it really does my heart good. That's what it's about, them having fun," added Wolleat.
