Focus on Health: Researchers Make Potential Breakthrough in Diabetes Treatment

There has been a potential breakthrough for the treatment of type-one diabetes.

Researchers have successfully turned mouse skin cells into cells that produce insulin.

A widely-used way of reprogramming cells is through the introduction of a virus.

But scientists were able to coax mouse skin cells to act like pancreatic beta cells without that virus.

When those cells were transplanted into diabetic mice, their blood sugar levels returned to almost normal.

If this technique works in humans, researchers say it could mean the end of daily insulin injections.

Too much or too little sleep may increase your risk of depression.

In a study, people who got between seven and nine hours of sleep were less likely to experience depressive symptoms.

That's compared to people who slept five hours a night or more than 10 hours a night.

For kids, the study found sleeping less than six hours a night increased their risk for a major depressive episode.

Most children and adults are getting less than the recommended amounts of whole grains and dietary fiber in their diets.

Nearly 40 percent of children and 42 percent of adults ate no whole grains at all.

Only three percent of children and eight percent of adults ate the recommended three servings per day.
