Two Dozen to be Cited for Poaching in Northern MN

AP

BAUDETTE - About two dozen people are expected to be cited after the Department of Natural Resources officers executed search warrants as part of a fish poaching investigation in far northern Minnesota.

DNR enforcement chief, Col. Ken Soring, says many of the cases in the fishing hot spot of Lake of the Woods involve ''double tripping.''

Anglers would catch fish, leave the lake and then return to catch more than their limit.

About 40 conservation officers descended on Lake of the Woods last week to execute the warrants.

Soring tells the Star Tribune some fishing guides and businesses participated in poaching.

He says some encouraged anglers to violate the law.

State law says any fish that are caught, eaten or frozen, must count as part of an angler's catch limit.
