SUPERIOR - Dog park supporters in Superior are going to have to wait a while for a park of their own because the Superior Jaycees have decided to pulled their funding. At Thursday evening’s Jaycees meeting, the board voted to back out of plans for a dog park in Superior. “We don't want to step on any toes. We wanted this to be a positive project, and we're still hoping to move forward with it being a positive project, but just not at this time,” said Superior Jaycees President Amber Pedersen. A few months ago, the Jaycees agreed to give the city $20,000 to build a dog park in the Billings Park neighborhood. After community comments and a petition with a few hundred names, the city council rejected the Jaycees' proposal and instead suggested Bear Creek Park as the spot for the dog park. Bear Creek Park is the same spot where the new animal shelter is currently being built. The Jaycees said they’ve talked with the Humane Society of Douglas County who does not favor a dog park next to their shelter. The Jaycees said they're not 100 percent supportive of that spot, so they are moving on."It turned a little more political than what the Jaycees had intended for this project to be,” Pedersen said. “We're still continuing to work with this project and we're still having conversations with the city looking at other sites, but just at this time we're not going to move forward with the Bear Creek site." Jaycees leaders say they've put the project on the back-burner and have already donated that money to positive projects in the community.
