SUPERIOR - The Superior City Council has given approval for a Big Lake man to build the world’s biggest ice sculpture on Barkers Island.

The goal is for the sculpture to attract winter tourists similar to the crowd flocking to the Apostle Islands' ice caves last winter.

Roger Hanson's ice sculptures are nationally recognized.

The sculpture is costing the city $30,000.

The ice wall will be about 60 feet tall and use water from the Superior Bay.

Construction will start when nights get below zero.

It’s estimated to reach its peak height mid-February.
