Police Ramping Up Patrols Near UMD

DULUTH- The holiday weekend will be full of festivities around UMD now that students are back.
Local and school police say they will be increasing patrols this weekend.
They'll not only be looking for underage drinking, raucous parties, and noise complaints, but they'll be looking for drunk drivers.
UMD Officer Mike Brostrom said, "unfortunately, St. Louis county, where we are at here, is the third deadliest county in the state right now for Minnesota alcohol related fatalities. So there definitely is a problem in the area and given the fact that we have such a higher population of students back now the potential is there for that problem to be worse."
Officers are asking students to be mindful of their neighbors when hanging outside or if having a party.
