SUPERIOR - Rain or shine, football fans made their way to Superior Friday to see the inaugural football game on the brand new turf at the National Bank of Commerce Spartan Sports Complex.
Fundraising for a sports complex in Superior started more than 20 years ago.
School officials thought it was only fitting for the students to cut the ribbon to make the NBC Sports Complex part of campus.
The project cost $4 million and was completely funded by community members.
The complex is complete with a ticket office, an impressive concession stand, new bleachers with a press box, and state of the art turf.
School officials and contributors say they got everything they asked for plus some, and the students are just excited to see it in action."I think it's definitely exciting, even though it's raining I think it's still going to be a huge turnout,” said Superior senior, Giselle Sziron. “The whole town I feel like the whole community's going to come together.”
The football part of the complex is complete, but the school is still looking for $60,000 in donations to finish the turf baseball field and lighting.
At Friday night’s game students sold inaugural game t-shirts, and pieces of turf to give community members a sense of ownership that this project belongs to everyone in the town.
With the new field the dream of many Superior alumni became a reality, and is just the beginning of a new Spartan legacy.
