Free School Supplies for Military Kids
By:
DULUTH - An event helped military families get ready for the upcoming school year. The Back to School Brigade kicked off on the 148th Fighter Wing base offering local military children free school supplies.
They got to fill up a free backpack with donated pens, paper, notebooks, calculators and anything else they needed.
"It's easier to come in and pick up back to school supplies you know at an event like this rather than trying to take all the kids to the store,” Operation Homefront Central Midwest Executive Director Darcy Clardy said. “Plus it's just a financial benefit to the family.” “It cuts their cost significantly to come in and even just get part of their school supplies taken care of free of charge."
The Newmans made the trip to the base all the way from Chisholm.
They're dad is currently deployed in Afghanistan.
Mom, Misty Newman, says getting school supplies for all four kids cost upwards of $400 dollars.
She's happy they were able to get all of their back to school gear without breaking the bank. "It's a really nice program for the community and especially to help support those of us with deployed family members,” said Misty. “It makes it a lot easier and a lot less stressful."
The event was hosted by Operation Homefront Central Midwest.
All of the back to school goods were donated by the Dollar Tree who set up a school supplies collection box at each of their stores.
