Duluthians Come Out to "Meet on the Street"

DULUTH - Third Street in West Duluth was packed Sunday with opportunities to learn how to live healthier and have fun while doing it.

Roughly 1,000 people filled the street in Lincoln Park for Meet on the Street to encourage physical activity and community building.

The street was open for folks of all ages in the neighborhood and other parts of town.

It was put on by St. Louis County Public Health, Blue Cross and Healthy Northland.

Blue Cross has a program called Play Streets and 12 communities in the state can receive a grant to put on their own event and this year Duluth was lucky enough to get one.

"This is an opportunity to get people out on the streets, which are a fabric that really tie the community together. Everywhere you go you need to use the street, and what better place to get together as a community and meet people and be together," said Josh Gorham, St. Louis County Public Health Nurse.

Different Northland organizations set up booths to display ways to stay healthy and get folks involved in physical activity.

Families from the area had fun with basketball, minnow races, disc golf and more.

"Just so everybody's aware of who's here, what goes on in the neighborhood, who lives in the house down the street, who's the elderly couple who might need your help in the winter, or those types of things. It's never a bad idea to know your neighbors," said West Duluth resident Heather Hobbs.

The next healthy living event will be Hillfest in East Duluth.

That takes place Sunday, August 24th.
