Medics on Hand for 38th Grandma's Marathon
By:
DULUTH - An often overlooked, but important, team was present along the marathon course. It's the doctors, nurses and trainers.
More than 40 volunteer physicians and more than 400 medical volunteers were on hand to keep runners safe.
The medical team had a big tent at the finish line and four medical tents throughout the race.
Aid stations were at every mile along the course and 14 ambulances were ready to respond.
"It's been a great day today. The conditions are excellent for running. The runners have come through looking good and feeling good. We really haven't had to do much today," said Dr. Ben Nelson, Medical Director for Grandma's Marathon.
There is a medical committee for the marathon that meets once a month to make improvements based on previous years.
