DULUTH- Local fire fighters also remembered Oberstar and said the community has suffered a huge loss.
They said Oberstar was a strong advocate for the fire department and for working people.
IFF Local 101 president, Pete Johnson said, "one of the things that he always stood up for us was SAFER grants, which are safe and adequate fire and emergency response. Duluth has three fire fighters right now due to one of those grants."
Johnson said the grants are not easy to get.
He said that Oberstar fought hard to help Duluth get that grant.
Johnson says the grant helped to bring their staffing level closer to national standards.
