DULUTH - With Thursday's heavy snowfall, Duluth was celebrating a big milestone. After the March 27 snowfall, the city is now at more than 100 inches of snow. Duluth is on track for one of the top five snowiest seasons on record. Last week was the official start to spring, and with a large snow like the one Thursday, the Northland is starting to wonder if the end of winter will ever come."We all wish it would go away because it's been a long hard winter here this year," said 12-year Duluth resident Mable Jefferson-France. The March 27 scene looked a lot different 365 days ago. The sidewalks were clear, the sun was shining, and all you needed was a light jacket. This time last year, the Northland thought the end was near, but April 2013 turned out to be the snowiest month ever with more than 51 inches falling.“Either love it, or hate it, or laugh at it,” said Geoffrey Jones of Duluth. If you take a look at Duluth’s average snowfall, it lands at about 83 inches. On March 27, 2013 last year, we were just over 77 inches. On March 27, 2014 we hit the 100 inch mark. With a triple digit season in the books, and second place for the coldest winter on record, spring hopefully isn't far behind. To make the top five for record snowfall, Duluth needs another foot and a half. The current record for snowiest season ever in Duluth is 135.4 inches.
