Cloquet Area Fire District Considers Name Change
By:
CLOQUET - The Cloquet Area Fire District has struggled through years of re-districting to better serve the community.
Now, they're asking the community for input on possibly changing their name.
The fire district has launched a survey asking if the community thinks a name change is a good idea.
The survey is six questions including where you live, if you think the district should change its name, and a spot to put suggestions for a new name.
Currently, the Cloquet Area Fire District serves Scanlon, Cloquet, Perch Lake Township, and the entire Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa reservation for fire services.
Fire Chief Kevin Schroeder says it's all part of keeping the community involved, and doing their job to the best of their ability.
"It represents the city of Cloquet when actually the district covers a much larger geographic area,” Schroeder explained. “We don't want people to feel excluded simply because of the name we call ourselves."
When the community did the re-districting back in 2009 many towns felt like they lost their identity when combining departments.
With a new name representing the entire community, the hope is to unite the entire area through the department.
The survey will run for approximately three weeks.
The chief says the community, not the department will decide if the name change is a good idea or not after the survey is over.
