Cloquet Eighth Graders Raise Donations for Less Fortunate

CLOQUET - The Olympics in Sochi may be over, but some kids in Cloquet set up their own mini Olympics today.

It's all for a program these Cloquet eighth graders are involved in called Destination Imagination.

It includes middle and high school students who compete in different challenges.

They put on the mini Olympics this afternoon in an effort to raise sports equipment donations for local sports associations.

They tell us the idea is to help kids their age who might want to play, but don't have the money for the equipment.

"Nobody's sitting out in gym class because they don't have the tennis shoes or anything like that. It's just really good to know that we're helping kids have fun and get to enjoy it like everyone else does too," said Franny Slater, an eighth grader at Cloquet who helped orginize the event.

This Destination Imagination group could have competed in acting or building, but they chose community service because they want to help the community in a lasting way.

"We all thought it'd be really cool to get to affect not just our school, not just winning something for our school, it'd be really cool if we could help our community and make a lasting impression," said Slater.

If you weren't able to make it today you can still donate your sports equipment at Cloquet Middle School until the end of the month.
