DULUTH – One of UMD's historic buildings is coming down. Wednesday crews started demolishing the campus's Stadium Apartments built in 1972.

Project managers say they are taking the buildings down because renovating or expanding them would come with a $12 million price tag.

All of the furnishings and appliances from the complex were recycled or reused.

"We had about 8 simi loads that were donated to Goodwill Industries,” UMD Director of Housing and Residence Life John Weiske said. “The only thing that went to the landfill were things that were damaged and that could not be reused."

Crews expect to have all the buildings down the first week of April.

The site will remain green space until upper administration decides the future use of the land.
