CLOQUET - A homeowner has his smoke detector to thank for saving his life after his house caught fire Sunday.
The Cloquet Area Fire District was called to the fire at 1539 Spring Lake Road at 3:20 a.m.
When crews arrived on scene, fire was coming from three sides of the house and power lines were down in the driveway.
The homeowner was awoken by a smoke detector and crawled out of his home because of heavy smoke, according to authorities.
He was transported to Essentia Health St. Mary's Medical Center where he was treated for smoke inhalation.
Crews were on scene for about five hours putting out the fire.
A cause is under investigation.
