Focus on Health: Woman Gives Birth to Identical Quadruplets

Kimberly Fugate was set to give birth to triplets on May 2, but at just 28 weeks, her plans took a turn.

"They just decided that morning they were coming," she said. There were more of "them" than she thought.

"They had got the three out and they said, 'more feet, more feet.' That's all I heard, and I said, 'no!'"

She gave birth to quadruplet girls who were all born without medical assistance.

"Spontaneous. No drugs to help me get pregnant," said Fugate.

It's something doctors say is highly uncommon.

"The odds of spontaneous quadruplets is one in every 729,000 live births. But what made this particular case, Mrs. Fugate's case, so unique is that these are identical quadruplets. And the chances of having identical quadruplets, it's almost incalculable," said Dr. James Bofill, Fugate's physician.

Kimberly's husband, Craig, was just as surprised as she was, but the couple says they're up for the challenge.

"I was kinda stunned there for a second, but I was like, 'well, we'll deal with it too,'" he said.

The last known set of identical quadruplets was born in Germany in January 2012.

Experts estimate there are 50-60 sets worldwide.
