BBB Warns of Cell Phone Scam
DULUTH – The Better Business Bureau of Minnesota is warning Minnesotans about a phone scam circulating through the state.
It's called the "473 One Ring Scam."
Victims will see a missed called on their phone from a 473 area code and then call back to find out who called them.
At that point, they have been roped into the scam, and end up paying the scammer money without realizing it until the phone bill comes.
The charges will show up as a "premium service" for $19.95.
The 473 area code is the prefix for Grenada, an international phone call, which can lead to big charges on your cell phone bill, according to the BBB.
Some one-ring phone calls could also be coming from a 268 area code.
The BBB advises not calling back to save yourself from the charges.
Federal agencies have reviewed thousands of complaints regarding the calls, and investigators believe robo-call software is being used to focus on different areas of the country.
