MINNEAPOLIS - With the roads still slick, the Minnesota State Patrol is reminding drivers to slow down. The safety warning follows four crashes involving state trooper squad cars. One of those crashes happened early Friday morning on I-494 at Pilot Knob Road in the Twin Cities. Trooper Kristie Sue Hathaway was inside her car when a man, who authorities say is suspected of DUI, hit her going about 60 miles an hour."The moment before I was hit, I was still holding out hope that he would swerve or slow down, you know, dissipate some speed that would cause the impact to be less, but he just kept going," said Hathaway.A fellow trooper took Hathaway to the hospital with minor injuries. The three other troopers involved in crashes around the state, including one in Virginia, were not seriously hurt."Getting into this job, it's not about if you're going to be hit, it's just about when," said Hathaway. With this latest snow system, troopers responded to 855 crashes state-wide, compared to 400 around this time last year.
