It's officially the new year, but we had quite a few events make headlines this last year.FOX 21's Natalie Froistad takes a look at the big events from the last three months of 2014.October brought an announcement from Duluth Mayor Don Ness, shocking the city.After 15 years in local politics, he decided not to seek re-election in 2015.Nearly 100 members of the 950th Engineer Clearance Company in Superior deployed for Afghanistan to clear roadways from buried explosives.A homicide investigation begins after Waubunoquay Randall, a 31-year-old Stoney Brook Township woman is found murdered in her home."In speaking with our investigators it was a crime scene that appeared very violent. No crime scene is less or worse than another, but this one was not good," said Lt. Jason Luvosky.Her 21 year old niece, Lydia Randall, was charged with the murder.Duluth city leaders announced plans for a $36 million luxury apartment development on London Rd.This is one of Duluth's biggest residential developments ever.November ripped in with a fire, completely destroying the originial Famous Dave's in Hayward.The fire left 38 employees without a job.The barbeque favorite has found a temporary location.Duluth city council President, Linda Krug, was accused of verbal bullying.Then, in an action not seen before by a Duluth Council President, she announced she was stepping down.Vice President Emily Larson took her place.The Northland got hit with an early blast of snow and Gile, Wisconsin was pounded with more than 73 inches.CO detector safety was highlighted after a father and daughter, 39 year old Michael Mechley and 11 year old Charlene Mechley, were found dead in their trailer in Rice Lake Township.Two other children survived.A random act of violence at the Super One store in West Duluth left 75 year old Sally Pionk dead."This is something that has never happened, ever in the life of our family being in the business," said Patrick Miner, Store Director for MIner's Inc. Super One Foods.35 year old Jesse Dahlstrom was charged with first degree murder for the crime.The case is on hold while he is undergoing a mental health examination.Another shock as UMD announced they won't be renewing women's hockey head coach Shannon Miller's contract.The school says they are trying to make budget cuts.Miller tells FOX 21 she would take a salary cut.Since she has been coaching at UMD, she has produced more than 20 Olympians and won five national championship titles.
