ASHLAND, Wis. - A national defense bill before Congress would make the nearly 100-year-old lighthouse in Ashland's harbor part of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.
The U.S. Coast Guard no longer has any use for the lighthouse, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.
The National Park Service is the only entity interested in obtaining and maintaining the lighthouse.
But, the legislation is needed to transfer the lighthouse to the Park Service.
Sen. Tammy Baldwin asked that the measure be included in the national defense bill for 2015.
The Journal Sentinel says the National Park Service already manages eight light stations on six of the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior.
