Icy Roadways Causes Serious Accident
VIRGINIA - The winter driving season arrived early the morning of November 8th in Virginia – Eveleth area. Falling temperatures and precipitation turning to snow formed ice on area roadways causing at least one serious crash on Ely Lake Drive in Fayal Township south of Eveleth just after 5:30 this morning.
Christian Dertinger, 23, of Ely Lake was eastbound on Ely Lake Drive when he lost control on the extremely icy roadway and collided head-on with Megan Paul, 22, also of Ely Lake.
Both drivers suffered non-life-threatening injuries although one driver was transported to a Duluth hospital for further treatment.
Officers would like to remind drivers that road conditions can change quickly this time of year and ask them to slow down and give emergency vehicles a wide berth when parked alongside the roadway at emergencies and other situations, especially when roadways are icy.
