SUPERIOR - You may have seen a carving pop up in Superior's government center this summer. The wooden logger stands tall to represent the logging industry in Northern Wisconsin. The sculpture came from a 150 year-old white pine harvested in Douglas County. It represents the role of the logging community and the other multiple use benefits the forest provides."So, you can see we have a logger here with a power saw in his hands, we have a snowmobiler, we have wildlife, we have some timber," said John Harris, Director of Forestry and Natural Resources for Douglas County.Harris added that loggers have paved the way for all other forest activities. "A lot of the snowmobile trails that are ridden today were built by loggers as access roads at one point. A lot of the wildlife that we have in the county forest has a forest to call home because of the management that we do in the county forest," Harris said.Wisconsin's Forest product industry is the number one manufacturing industry in the state's northern region.
