DULUTH - As road salt prices throughout the Midwest continue to sky rocket, maintenance crews with St. Louis County say they're actually under budget for road salt and are all stocked up for this winter. Despite last year's harsh winter, officials say they only used 16,000 tons of salt compared to the 18,000 tons they typically go through."This year we've reduced our order a little bit,” said St. Louis County maintenance engineer, Pete Eakman. “Even with inflation we're down about 100,000 even on the order so we're under budget." County officials say their modern plows and new mixtures are the reason they're spending less.
