DULUTH - City and housing leaders are digging deeper into Duluth's housing crisis.Representatives say low income housing tax credits are critical tools for the city to use to build affordable housing and breathe new life into blighted neighborhoods.
But right now the stability of those credits in the future is not very clear.
Congressman Rick Nolan says he's on board with legislation to extend them."Our H.R. 4717, which would restore and make permanent this low income tax credit, is something that I've embraced,” said Nolan. “There's good bipartisan support for it I want you to know. If we can just get if for a vote on the floor of the house and the senate I'm absolutely certain we can pass it."
Housing partners also talked about how important other federal funding is in order to create affordable and market rate housing."In order for people to come into our community, to bring in new jobs, to maintain employment, we need a good housing stock," Local Initiatives Support Cooperation Executive Director Pamela Kramer said.
A recent study revealed Duluth will need more than 4,000 new units by 2020.
