DULUTH - A miracle walked into the doors of Essentia Health Friday morning.
His name is Brian Bertrang.
It all began two years ago on a hot summer camping trip in Gordon, Wisconsin.
Little did the Bertrang family know that this trip would radically change Brian's life forever.
It started with a poke to his finger that left a burning sensation he had never felt before.
Later that evening Brian was rushed to St. Marys Medical Center where he was diagnosed with sepsis, a life threatening complication of an infection, and strep–pneumonia.
In order to save his life doctors had to amputate both legs while also losing a finger and thumb in the process.
With a one percent chance of living Brian is not only lucky to be alive but to be able to walk again.
Today, he thanks those caregivers who saved his life for the first time since he was diagnosed.
Bertrang said, “My whole body went into a complete tangle.” That is how he described the feeling of
walking in and seeing everyone for the first time. He continues to say, “It’s just an honor to
meet everyone and see their wonderful faces in person. I can't even tell you what that does for me.”
Two years ago Brian was in a wheelchair and he now plans to go back to work when he feels comfortable with his prosthetics.
