SUPERIOR - Investigators in Superior are focusing hard on Tuesday’s homicide investigation. Five suspects were arrested Wednesday night and now two are charged with felony murder, as of Thursday.Garth Velin, 20, of Superior, was killed from a bullet to the chest Tuesday night, according to officials.Tips from the community and a trail of social media comments lead police to the five suspects the very next day.On Thursday, Chance Andrews, 17, of Superior, and Kyham Dunn, 20, of Duluth, were both charged with felony murder.
Police tell Fox 21, formal charges will happen Friday for Teah Phillips, 17, of Superior, and for two Duluth brothers -- Dallas, 18, and Kane Robinson, 20.According to the criminal complaint, the five suspects parked behind Subway a block from Velin's home.
One of the suspects went to Velin's home claiming she was looking for a lost dog to ensure he was home, according to the complaint.
Velin’s father, Paul, stopped by the house to visit his son at about 6:45 p.m., which was minutes before police were called to the scene. Velin’s father quickly left, and then his son was later shot.
Minutes before the shooting, neighbors reported seeing three men with bandanas over their faces walk to Velin's home. According to the criminal complaint, three of the suspects said they were quote, "going to get some money."
That's when the report claims: "Chance pulled a gun, they wrestled for the gun, and the gun went off" -- hitting Velin in the chest and killing him.
The suspects then ran back to the car and said it "went bad," according to the complain.Andrews went on to tell the rest of the suspects that there was an accident and that he would kill them if they ever told anyone about what happened, according to the complaint.Besides the suspects mentioning money as a possible motive, Velin's girlfriend told police that Velin sold marijuana.
Friends tell Fox 21 a memorial service for Velin is set for Saturday afternoon at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Superior.
Meanwhile, a tragic event like this can be difficult to deal with emotionally. Councilors suggest parents talk with their kids about what happened, and reassure them they're safe in their community."As parents frequently we want to protect our children from the tragedies of the world and from the way in which we're vulnerable and can't control our situations," explained HDC’s Director of Child Trauma Services, Saprina Matheny.
Counselors say one of the biggest keys with life events like this is listening to your child and talking openly about their fears and worries.
