DULUTH- After running aground Saturday, the Paul R Tregurtha is underway.Folks at Bayfront park got an up close and personal encounter with the longest ship in the laker fleet.
The Paul R Tregurtha ran aground right behind Bayfront park around 3:15 pm.
The coast guard says she was trying to execute a turn but did not turn fast enough.
Crews attempted to remove the ship on their own before calling in tug assistance.
The Tregurtha was freed from the channel around 7 p.m. and was taken to the Duluth Port Authority terminal for inspection.
Lieutenant Bill Fitzgerald said, "she was met by two Coast Guard inspectors they surveyed the vessel, found no damage or mechanical problems. An investigation was also conducted. The investigation is still ongoing. The results will not be released until the investigation is complete."
The Tregurtha is currently underway to St. Claire, MI.
She was cleared late Saturday night and left just after midnight Sunday morning.
