DULUTH- The Paul R. Tregurtha ran aground behind Bayfront Park Saturday afternoon.Authorities say the ship had just loaded to capacity and is carrying 68,000 tons of coal.
At 3:15 she ran aground while attempting to turn towards the lift bridge.
The cause of the grounding is under investigation.
Coast Guard officials say the best indication is the ship initiated the turn late but won't know for sure until they complete their investigation.
Officials at Interlake Steamship tell us they don't believe there is any damage to the hull at this time.
General Counselor, Tom Wynne said, "there's no indication that the vessel is taking on any water so that's indicative of the fact that the hull was likely not penetrated."
The ship was freed from the channel around 7p.m. and headed to the Duluth Port Authority where the Coast Guard and engineers will assess the ship.
There are no reports of injuries or pollution at this time.
This is not the first time the Tregurtha has grounded.
