DULUTH - It was 13 years ago that terrorists struck on 9/11.

Ceremonies happened across the country and in the Northland Thursday.

Community members and leaders gathered at the Statue of Liberty in Duluth to commemorate the anniversary.

Through song, prayer, military performance and with kind words, recollection and appreciation they remembered the thousands of people who died at the hands of terrorists.

"We honor the strength and the courage of those who carry on their legacy,” said Tony Guerra with the Northland Veterans Service Committee. “From the first responders to the firefighters law enforcement and others who went in to help others in need."

Duluth Police Chief Gordon Ramsay also talked about how the role of police has changed since 9/11.

Ramsay says they now prepare and monitor for major disasters, share information among law enforcement and use tools like Facebook and Twitter to learn more about suspects and gather information on potential terrorist activities.

Ramsay also said more than 90 percent of their crimes are solved with witnesses or people who have valuable information.
