WEST DULUTH - A truck driver is recovering from severe burns after an explosion Tuesday.
The accident happened just before 2 p.m. at 2231 West Superior Street.
Duluth Assistant Fire Chief Erik Simonson said the truck was picking up used waste oil at a business when something went terribly wrong.
"During the process of pumping out of this business there was a backfire inside the trailer and an explosion and the driver sustained some pretty serious burns," said Simonson.
According to Simonson, this type of explosion is very uncommon.
The driver suffered second degree burns to his upper torso.
Authorities have not identified the driver, but said the trucking company is based out of International Falls.
