Duluth To Demolish Chester Bowl Park Ski Jumps This Week
DULUTH, Minn. AP - A Duluth ski jump is coming down after 90 years in the air.
Minnesota Public Radio News reports the jump is being demolished this week and a smaller jump was torn down Monday in Chester Bowl Park.
Duluth officials say the rotting jumps are in disrepair and are a liability.
Big Chester Bowl Ski Jump was built in 1924 and Little Chester in 1969. The lower portions of both were removed in 2011 to stop people from climbing on them.
Former Olympic skier George Hovland says their demolition is "like losing and old friend.'' He says Duluth should have installed a security fence instead.
A city official says it would have cost about $1 million to restore the jumps. The city plans to create a memorial to Big and Little Chester.
