CLOQUET - A Northland reservation is hoping to get the same type of protection some national parks and monuments receive.

The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa is trying to get the reservation's air quality protected.

Officials say they have filed paperwork to get a class 1 designation which would not affect existing facilities in the area, but would limit the amount of emissions and polutions from future development.

"We think that this offers the band and really northeast Minnesota, our area a great way to continue to protect the environment and lifestyle that we enjoy here," Fond du Lac Reservation air program coordinator Alex Jackson said.

Right now the band is in a public comment period for the new designation.

They'll hold public hearings this October.
