TWO HARBORS - It started as a small operation, brewing about 180 gallons per week, but this dangerously good brewer is expanding to about 3,600 gallons and is also helping to revitalize downtown Two Harbors. For Clint MacFarlane, brewing beer is in his blood."Just fell in love with the process itself. Obviously the end product is always good," said MacFarlane. His great grandfather was a brewer before prohibition and MacFarlane is bringing a bit of the old school back with his brews."Which is the way it was in late 1800s into the early 1900s before prohibition, every community had a brewery and yeah it just worked."Castle Danger really embraces local elements in its ales."We'll do a fresh hop beer which includes local hops from Brule, Wisconsin. We use local maple syrup from up in Lutsen."Because they use local ingredients they can do something MacFarlane says most bigger commercial brewers can't."Basically they get picked off the vine, dumped into the beer within 24 hours and then so you get a lot of oils on those hops that wouldn't necessarily be in a normal process."Castle Danger is also committed to supporting the surrounding community. All the equipment in the brewery was made in the U.S. and they hope their new space will help bring more growth to downtown Two Harbors."I've been living in Two Harbors most of my life and this is the first new development in the downtown area that I can remember."So now a city as unique as Two Harbors has a beer just as unique to boot."So that's really a true original beer that you probably won't find in a lot of places."If you're interested in some of these dangerously good ales, Castle Danger is having a grand opening August 15 and 16.
