ASHLAND - After hours of discussion and public comment, the Ashland planning commission voted to allow the Chequamegon Food Co-op to demolish two 130-year-old buildings to make way for a bigger parking lot.
With a 4-3 vote Tuesday evening, the planning commission approved the conditional use permit for the land meaning they are allowing the lots to be demolished to become a parking lot.
The co-op bought the buildings with the intention of tearing them down as soon as possible.
Their plans have made some community members upset which made the vote difficult.
With Tuesday’s approval, the plan will move to the Ashland City Council later this month.
The co-op hopes to start demolition August 20.
