Demolition Begins to Make Way for New Transit Center

DULUTH - The demolition phase of the Duluth Transit Authority's multimodal project is now underway.
The plan is to demolish the Salter building and Wells Fargo ramp first.
Then crews plan to move toward the skywalk, which will be shut down over to Wells Fargo for a three day period; being one of few inconveniences.
"Very exciting for us really, this demonstrates the first real positive construction that we've seen," said Dennis Jensen, with the DTA.
The key for this project is not just for bus passengers, but for bicyclists and drivers.
The center will also provide parking for electric and hybrid cars and a bi-level parking garage.
The demolition will take at least three weeks.
"We really appreciate everyone's patience with the project downtown. There is going to be some noise and some detours mainly with the skywalk system so we just want to thank everyone for their patience," said Heath Hickok, with the DTA.
Crews hope to finish the demolition as quietly as they can, so they'll wrap up their work every day around 5:30 p.m.
Once the demolition is done construction will begin and the center should be open and operating by fall of 2015.
