DULUTH - As runners prepared for Grandma's Marathon, Special Olympians and supporters raised awareness for their biggest event of the year.
Fifteen officers with the Duluth Police Department carried a torch on an eight-mile run through the streets of Duluth.
The ritual is in its thirteenth year and officers said it's not only a chance to fundraise, but to show the athletes the community is behind them.
"It's for a great cause. Obviously when you see the Special Olympic athletes you realize the impact this has on them and their life and it's a big part of the athletes' lives," said Duluth Police Chief Gordon Ramsay.
One-hundred-fifty athletes from Duluth will be participating in the Minnesota Special Olympics which kicks off in the Twin Cities next weekend.
