Pet Rescue Kits Donated to Local Fire Departments

HERMANTOWN - Thanks to a generous donation from the Invisible Fence Brand of the Northland, the Duluth and Hermantown fire departments are now properly able to treat cats and dogs who suffer from smoke inhalation after a fire.
The specially made masks come in three sizes and are designed to cover the animal's nose.
"Currently tasked with using our oxygen masks that we use on humans to fit the animals and it doesn't quite work so well,” said Duluth Fire Department’s Training Chief, Mike Consie. “This will actually allow us to treat the animals much more efficiently and effectively."
Each kit costs $55 and 11 of them were donated to Duluth and Hermantown.
Firefighters say they save animals at about half of the fires they respond to.
The kits have pushed the departments to get more in-depth training on how to correctly help animals in emergency situations.
