Focus on Health: Second MERS Case Discovered in Florida

There is a second case of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome or MERS in the U.S.

Officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Florida Department of Health are investigating.

The first U.S. case was reported earlier this month in Indiana.

That person is an American health care provider who was working in Saudi Arabia.

Their recovery is said to be going well.

CDC scientists do not know exactly how MERS spreads, but they don't believe it's from casual contact.

Cervical cancer may affect more women in the U.S. than previously thought especially those who are African-American or between the ages of 65-69.

Previous studies estimated the rate was about 12 cases per 100,000 women with the highest rates being between ages 40-44.

But new research found women who had hysterectomies were being counted and shouldn't have been.

Once the cervix is removed a woman cannot get cervical cancer.

So the actual risk is much higher at nearly 19 cases per 100,000 women.

Teenagers with parents who are heavy smokers are more likely to try cigarettes and become heavy smokers themselves.

This was discovered after researchers studied more than 400 parents and their children ranging in age from 12-17.

Study authors believe social learning plays an important role in intergenerational smoking.

They suggest pediatricians monitor the smoking habits of their patients and their parents.
