Douglas County Set to Take Over Superior Animal Shelter

SUPERIOR - Superior animal lovers can breathe a sigh of relief as the city council unanimously voted to have the Douglas County Humane Society take over until the end of the year.

The contract with the county comes after Mayor Bruce Hagen proposed building a new shelter in what he said is against the city's best interest.

Currently, Animal Allies is running the shelter, but as of May 1 the county will take over.

The Humane Society of Douglas County plans to use the Superior location only to take in stray animals, meaning all adoptions will be done at the county shelter.

“We're going to make it work,” said Marcy Barby, a board member with the Douglas County Humane Society. “We all know what we're in for and it's going to be a huge amount of work, but we're up to the challenge. We're going to do it and I think we're going to do a great job.”

The city of Superior is paying Douglas County $11,000 a month to help with operating costs.

The city plans to start bidding on contractors for the new shelter in July.
