Harsh Weather Causes Slick Road Conditions for Northland Drivers

DULUTH - The snow and sleet just seems to keep coming and that made it pretty messy on the road for Northland drivers.

The day started with freezing rain making the roads icy and causing a nasty morning commute.

That quickly turned to light snow making the roads even more slippery.

The light snow became heavy snow for the main part of the afternoon building up slush on the roads.

We talked to some Northland drivers who braved the roads Thursday and they said it wasn't nice, but they kept it slow to stay safe.

"It's getting kinda slippery. It's gonna be nasty when it gets going. It's not bad right now, but it's gonna be bad. That's Duluth for ya," said Robert Hoffman of Duluth.

"I drove a big truck up to International Falls and back, if you were careful and took it easy you were fine."

The State Patrol has some tips for winter driving.

You should increase your stopping distances to a safer length and keep at least five car lengths behind snowplows.

If your car starts to skid, remain clam, ease your foot off the gas and turn the steering wheel in the direction you want to go.

Also, never use cruise control.

Of course, avoid unnecessary driving if road conditions are too poor.
