ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - A Minnesota House panel has approved a measure that would ban people convicted of domestic abuse from having guns.
The public safety committee approved the measure Tuesday on a voice vote.
It's sponsored by Cottage Grove Democrat Dan Schoen.
The bill would also apply to people subject to restraining orders.
The bill didn't get universal support.
Julie Zappa, a Grey Cloud Island woman who testified that she survived a physically abusive relationship, said the bill is misguided.
Zappa said a piece of paper won't keep battered women safe.
She said abusers will find a way to get a gun, regardless of its legality.
