SUPERIOR - Transportation officials say the Bong Bridge has deteriorated and is in need of some T.L.C. For the next two years crews will work to preserve and expand the life of the 12,000 ft. long bridge.

The $18.2 million project includes a deck overlay, paintjob, repairing and replacing the sidewalk, arch, joints and installing LED lights.

In addition to those bridge items they will eliminate the signalized intersection and install a roundabout there.

"Eventually you gotta get in there and do a little work, stuff doesn't last forever and that's what we got going on here,” WisDOT Project Leader Brian Mattson said. “It's all relatively minor work that we're doing in the grand scheme of a bridge, but none the less it's a big undertaking it's a large, large project."

Construction for the project starts March 31st and it will happen in two phases.

During the first phase of construction motorists will not be able to use the Bong’s westbound lane until November 1st.

Officials advise there will be some impact to traffic.

Motorists can expect lane and road closures but they say there will still be free flowing traffic.
