DULUTH -Let the melting begin. Temperatures across the Northland soared 20 degrees above average Monday afternoon.

“This is the spring season, so if you look at a weather map it’s going up and down up and down. And that means big warm up and big cool downs,” said National Weather Service Meteorologist Carol Christenson.

And Monday's near record warmth is bringing people out of hibernation.

One visitor said, “It’s a beautiful day in Duluth, got to love Minnesota weather, and 40 plus degrees."

“Just a beautiful day, especially after a long winter. You kind of get cabin fever. You want to be out and about not shivering and shaking all the time,” said Tourist Orval Osmundson.

And some just couldn’t leave the jacket behind.

“I see you are still bundled up, is that just for precautionary reasons? said John Zeigler.

“Ya habit, It’s been a long winter,” said Valerie Osmundson.

But no warm March day is complete without someone pulling out the shorts.

“So you didn’t have to go to Mexico this time?” said Zeigler.

“No Mexico, this will do. After negative 20 degree weather for a long time, I’m enjoying the 40 degree weather got my shorts on,” said another visitor.

Shorts or not, for many Monday's sunshine was definitely a reason to spend time outside.

“Are you happy to get the kids out of the house?" said Zeigler.

“O my gosh, too happy, they have been going crazy inside so it’s great to be here,” said Amy Johnson.

Enjoy it now because we cool back down below average Wednesday.

But forecasts show the worst of the cold is behind us.

“The sun is really working over the atmosphere now and to plunge deep down into major subzero is much more unlikely,” said Christenson.
