Milk Man Still Relevant In A Go-Go World

BABBITT- In our 24 hour world the grocery store seems to reign supreme.  So why would we need the friendly neighborhood milk man?

Jennifer Bee said, "It tastes way better. You won't go back to paper of plastic. You can definitely taste the plastic. Glass is just ice cold and good."

But it's not just quality Bee likes.

"It's kind of a tradition. Pretty much everybody in my family. My brother lives in town, they get it. His sister lives in town, they get it, like I said, my grandparents, my parents."

At Dahl's sunrise dairy in Babbitt, they say there's a right way to do milk, and the other way.

Owner Wayne Dahl said, "If it looks whiter, it is. If it tastes richer, it is. We take great pride in what we produce and we believe the quality of our milk would speak for itself, if the customer would ever give it a try. And those who have tried it, they're not going back to anything else."

Dahl gets his milk from dairy farmers he's known for decades and he says his milk has several benefits.

"Their milk is RBGH free. No artificial bovine growth hormone has been injected into the cows."

At the plant they pasteurize, homogenize, and bottle the milk themselves.

They also make butter and soon, "we bought the assets of a company out of St. Louis Missouri called Velvet Freeze. So we have all the equipment to make ice cream and that's probably going to be one our next ventures."

The friendly neighborhood milk man will bring it to your door, whether you live in Grand Rapids, Cloquet, or Duluth.

And Dahl believes the quality will ensure the milk man's survival for decades to come.

"As long as there are glass bottles the milk man will always be around."
