U.S. Marshal Service Takes Over Last Place on Earth

DULUTH - Neighboring businesses of Last Place on Earth were glowing Thursday after U.S. marshals took over the property.

The locks were changed and the notice of seizure was posted with 'no trespassing' signs during the afternoon hours.

Marshals also took down the big "Free Jim Carlson" banner that took up the top portion of the outside of the building, along with the signs and political propaganda in the store's windows.

The marshals with the U.S. Marshal Service put up U.S. Marshal posters in the place of all the signs.

This latest move comes under a judge's order, and the owners of neighboring business, ShelDon, are more than pleased.

"This just reassures us that it's going to be permanent. And we're excited. We're excited to see what happens to that building," said CFO Mark Fredriskson. "Whoever it is, they will be much, much welcomed to the neighborhood and they'll be an improvement over who we had there before."

Duluth police officers were on hand Thursday afternoon while the U.S. marshals documented inventory on all levels of the building.  The iconic Last Place wooden sign will be taken down at a later date, according to police.

The official forfeiture of Last Place will happen when Carlson is sentenced on 51 federal counts. That date has yet to be set.  Carlson's attorney says he'll appeal the case after that.
