Ice Road Open to Madeline Island

BAYFIELD - If you're headed out to the ice caves, there's another unique experience you won't want to miss.

You can take a drive across Lake Superior from Bayfield to Madeline Island.

Every year, old Christmas trees are collected to line the road across the lake and the ice is about two feet thick.

You can actually pull off to the side and see the thickness through the cracks.

Kelley Linehan with the Bayfield Chamber of Commerce said, "We don't get the ice road every year so it's definitely a special experience just like the ice caves. So if you're here for the ice caves, I would absolutely recommend taking the ice road to Madeleine Island."

Last year the road was only open for nine days.

This year, they're hoping to use it until March.
